<title>Assessment of Groundwater Use by Crop Farmers in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.</title>

<summary type="text">Assessment of Groundwater Use by Crop Farmers in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

In this study, a critical assessment of the use of groundwater by crop farmers was done. The objectives of this study were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of crop farmers in the study area, assess the cost of groundwater used by crop farmers in the study area, examine crop farmers perception of groundwater use in the study area, determine socio-economic factors influencing use of groundwater by crop farmers in the study area and identify constraint factors mitigating crop farmers use of groundwater in the study area. Multistage random sampling technique was used to select a total of eighty (80) respondents used for the study. Data for the study was collected with the use of well-structured questionnaires. The statistical tools that were used include descriptive statistics such as percentages, mean, relative frequencies, and inferential statistics such as probit regression model.  The result of the socio-economic distributions of the respondents according to their age showed that the majority (57.5%) of the household heads were within the age range of 21-40 years. The average age was 43 years. The distribution of the respondents according to marital status showed that the majority (80%) of the respondents were married, while (12.5%) of them were widowed and (7.5%) were single. According to household size, greater proportion (41.25%) of the respondents had household sizes of between 1 and 5 persons. In terms of years spent in school by the respondents, the average years spent in school was 9 years. The result in terms of gender also indicated that the majority (85%) of the respondents were males while (15.5%) were females. In terms of experience, the distribution of the respondents showed that highest proportion of respondents (36.25%) had farming experience of 6 to 10 years. The average year of farming experience was 11 years. With regard to membership of cooperative society, it was found that greater proportion of the respondents (66.25%) belonged to a cooperative society while (33.75%) did not belong to any cooperative society. Findings from the analysis also showed that the average total cost of groundwater technology incurred was 49, rejected. Lack of capital and high cost of equipment was identified as chief constraint to use of groundwater. Based on these findings it was recommended that accessible sources of capital should be made available to the crop farmers and prospective investors in the study area, so as to enable them expand their production and take advantage of opportunities as they come and there should be training and re-training on irrigation and groundwater harvesting techniques among the crop farmers in the area, through better extension service delivery, for better harvesting

The technological changes in the mode of information flow has given rise to what is today known as digital environment.  An environment in which most students encounter great challenges to freely navigate in.  This is because the nature of information resources that flow in the environment requires some basic skills which are referred to as information literacy skills. The complex process involved in acquiring information literacy skills demands for collaboration among students. Collaboration is a learning strategy which gives students the opportunity to work together with their peers to achieve a common goal. We examined this issue by assessing the impact of collaboration in improving students’ information literacy skills in the digital environment.  The paper highlights various information literacy skills required of students to adapt to the digital environment; identifies various collaborative platforms to enhance acquisition of such skills; discusses the relevance of collaboration among students; its challenges and strategies to improve collaborative learning among students.

<summary type="text">Economic Assessment of the Contribution of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) to the Livelihoods of the Rural Dwellers in Anambra State, Nigeria.

In the recent decades, there has been growing interest in the contribution of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) to livelihoods and poverty alleviation among the rural populace. This has been prompted by the fact that communities living adjacent to forests rely to a great extent on the NTFPs for their livelihoods. The broad objective of this study was to ascertain the economic contribution of non-timber forest products to the livelihood of the rural dwellers. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of respondents in the study area; identify and describe livelihood opportunities provided by the NTFPs; identify the common NTFPs, the parts used, their uses, methods of use and end produce in the area; ascertain the socioeconomic factors that influence the harvest of NTFPs by respondents; to identify the share of income from NTFPs to the respondent's total income. Data were collected through the use of structured questionnaire, from 100 randomly selected respondents supplemented with verbal interview in the study local government areas, however, 81 Questionnaire were analysed after screening. All data collected from the survey areas were subjected to simple descriptive statistics and logistic regression for analysis.A total of 22 useful species of plant and 5 species of animal origins were recorded as having various applications in the lives of the rural dwellers in the area. The result showed that NTFPs in the study areas have varying use categories such as Fuel (69.1%), Medicine (22.2%), Food/fruits (75.3%), Oil &amp; Spice/condiments (8.0%), Construction and crafting (64.2%), Fodder (55.6%), Environmental protection/amelioration (75.6%) and Proteins/bush meats (65.4%). The study also revealed that, different people in the area collect these resources frequently, process them and sell them as a means of earning income. . More so, socioeconomic factors like, Total education year (0.027), occupation (0.021) and Household size (0.041) were significant at 5% level of significance, hence influence the collection of NTFPs. The average annual income generated from the use and sale of NTFPs by respondents was shown to be ₦465,500 (44.9% of average total income).  There is need for forest policy to include the production of NTFPs and local agro-forestry schemes should be developed within community forests to allow for the production of bush meats, breastfruit, bamboo, traditional medicines, honey and other forest food since they contribute immensely to the livelihood of the rural people.

The study assessed the effect of the outbreak of armyworm on maize production in Nsukka agricultural zone, Enugu State Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: describe the socio-economic characteristics of maize farmers, describe the nature and manifestation of armyworm outbreak in maize production in the study area, determine socio-economic factors affecting maize output, identify control measures to these pest / disease outbreaks in the study area and identify constraints faced by the farmers in coping with the pest. A three stage random sampling technique was used to select120 maize farmers in Nsukka Agricultural zone of Enugu state. Data collected for the study were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics included frequency, mean, percentages and data collected was done using questionnaire and inferential statistics used was Ordinary Least Square multiple regression. Analysis of the socio-economic characteristics of maize farmers showed that these attributes influenced the output of maize in the area.  Regression analysis showed that age of maize farmers, years in school and primary occupation were all positively signed at p≤0.05, house size is negatively significant at p≤0.01 level of probability and training received, income and farm size were significant at p≤ 0.01 and p≤0.10 levels of probability, respectively to influence the output of maize in the area. Majority of the respondents 53% used pesticides as their control measures against pest and disease of maize, 68% adopted replanting of affected plot as their own way of controlling the pest and disease of maize while others used local herbs, ash, hand picking, and weeding regularly. The following recommendations were proffered: maize farmers should be encouraged to use cultural methods of controlling pest and disease in the area, because of their cost effectiveness, inputs like pesticides and herbicides should be made available and affordable, by the various levels of government for use by maize farmers, government and other stakeholders in the maize value chain should make available to farmers disease and pest resistant maize variety, early planting of maize and improving extension services in the state is also recommended to escape the period of invasion of pest  in the area and the recommended pesticides for controlling armyworm.
