The paper attempted to find out if male and female undergraduate students were
motivated by the same factors to study Library and Information Science and
whether and why some people use librarianship as a "transit camp". Survey
method was applied. The instrument used for collection of data was the
questionnaire. The findings of the study showed greater percentage of females
(38.46%) than males (26.67%) considered LIS when they could not secure
admission to their first choice programme. Females did not set high priority on
economic rewards when they decided to choose the library profession and they
showed greater rate of stereotyping towards the library profession than males. It
was also revealed that 6.41% of females and 6.67% of males chose librarianship
when they decided to change occupation and 52.78% of the total respondents did
not choose library and information science out of volition, conviction and
commitment to the course of librarianship but were propelled by extraneous
circumstances. Out of this category 77.19% were females. The · paper
recommended that both the Nigerian Library Association and the Library Schools
should market library services in order to create awareness of the potentials of the
library profession.

This paper aims at contributing to the growing discourse of job satisfaction of workers in the workplace. in examining the factor that contribute to job satisfaction of academic librarians, two research questions and a null hypothesis were promulgated using a survey design. The thirty six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in addition to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja were sampled through a stratified disproportionate random sampling technique, the six Geo-politcal zones of the country were stratified, each zone forming a stratum and at least one university was sampled in each stratum. this made for wide coverage and enabled all the different parts of the country with different socio-cultural and religious backgrounds to be represented. A questionnaire was then used to gather data which made it possible to identify factors that contribute to job satisfaction of Librarians in Nigeria. the factors were the following: agreeable colleagues, adequate salary and other remuneration; good conditions of service; initiative and freedom to develop own ideas; use of acquired professional experience, security of tenure; opportunity to serve people and interact with clients, increasing professional status; active participation in administration and planning; exercise responsibility and authority ;promotion prospects; provision of technical support facilities and finally, quality in service training. These factors were found to be gender neutral. Therefore, there was no difference between the ratings of male and female librarians. The survey then ended with several recommendations to enhance the job satisfaction of academic Librarians in Nigeria.

Prior to the colonization of Nigeria by the British, men and women In this country engaged in several small scale activities directed at achieving self sufficiency. During the colonization years, this structure of production on small scale did not bring change since the colonial masters were not interested in expanding production level s .All they were interested in was to buy cheaply that which was produced and send back to their home country. In the post-colonial era in Nigeria, especially during the Oil boom era, the government (both Federal and State) attempted to industrialize them. Nation by the establishment of large firms.
