AKAKWA, NJIDEKA PEACE
This study was carried out to assess the socio-economic and geographical differences in utilization of routine immunization in Enugu East L.G.A. of Enugu State. The objectives of the study were to determine the utilization of routine immunization service among children 0-2 years in different geographical locations, compare utilization of routine immunization services among different socio-economic classes and identify factors that affect utilization of routine immunization. A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used for the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 2 communities (1 rural, 1 urban) from the L.G.A. for the study and snow-ball non-probability sampling technique was used to select the participant for the study who met the inclusion criteria. A sample size of 384 was determined using Godden formula for infinite population. A validated researcher developed questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze data. Chi-Square was used to test the hypothesis. Findings revealed that the location of respondents did not affect utilization of immunization. It was also discovered that utilization increased with increase in socio-economic status, the higher the socio economic status, the higher the utilization. It was also discovered that there are factors that affect utilization of routine immunization which include time schedule, availability of vaccines, erroneous beliefs about immunization, attitude of some health workers. Based on these findings it was concluded that health workers should intensity effort to see that children receive the needed immunization as at when due. It is recommended that mothers should be encouraged to immunize their children to avoid the risk of future occurrence of these preventable diseases.

Factors Influencing Adherence to Diet Among Patients Attending Renal Unit in two Selected Hospitals in Enugu
AGWU, NNENNA EKE
Chronic renal disease is one of the chronic diseases worldwide now assuming epidemic proportion in the developed and developing countries. Renal diet as part of management regimen for renal diseases aims at modifying eating behaviour to relieve the kidneys from accumulating excess waste products like urea. The study was done to determine factors influencing adherence to prescribed diet among patients attending renal units of university of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu and NEO Hospital and Dialysis Centre Enugu. Adherence is strictly keeping to specific dietary instruction given to a patient with renal disease, to eat only the recommended renal diet in the recommended proportion and regularity. Total number of 51 adults’ male and female patients on maintenance dialysis for at least 2 months and above was used for this study. A descriptive cross sectional study was done and a researcher designed standardized questionnaire containing 35 items titled self-reported dietary and fluid adherence, adapted from Finchman (2005), University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa. This was used to collect data at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital and NEO hospital and dialysis centre; from November 2015 to December 2015. Majority (54.9%) were men and (68.6%) were married. Mean age was 48 years and (70.6%) had tertiary education while (2.0%) had no form of education. 75% were on special prescribed renal diet and 39.2% were adherent to the diet. 68.6% had spousal support enhancing their adherence and those with higher family income (47.1%) were more adherent. Age was significant at po.034>p0.05. Based on these findings it was concluded that there was impediments to adhering to prescribed renal diet. Recommendations included that patients should be properly educated on the importance of adherence to regimen and proper monitoring of renal patients should be improved on by health care providers.

Socio – Demographics Of Pregnant Women as Correlates Of Anaemia In Pregnancy At Booking In selected Health Care Centres, Warri, Delta State Nigeria
Esievo, Njideka Judith
This is a non-experimental retrospective study on the socio-demographic of pregnant women as correlates of anaemia in pregnancy at booking in selected health care centres in Warri Delta state from January 2015 to December 2016. The total population of women who booked in the health facilities, was 5346 of which 3876 were eligible for the study based on the inclusion criteriaas such there was no need for sampling. The instrument for data collection was a proforma/checklist which was validated by the supervisor and content reader. TheResearch objectives were to determine the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy and the severity among the study population at booking. other objective was to determine the correlation between parity and anaemia in pregnancy, educational level of mother with anaemia in pregnancy and mothers age at booking and anaemia in pregnancy of mothers who booked in the health centers. The hypotheses were focused on determining the correlation between the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy and interpregnancy interval (IPI) and also the correlation of the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy and gestational age at booking. The major findings were that; in the study population there the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy was 1804 (46.5%), With regards to severity in ascending order1363 (75.5%) of mothers who booked had mild anaemia, 415(23.0%) had moderate anaemia while only 26(1.4%) had severe anaemia. The association between the anaemia in pregnancy and parity shows that; primiparous had a prevalence of 15(18.3%), multiparous, 664(33.2%). and among grand multiparous it is 1125(62.7%). The hypotheses were tested using Pearson correlation at 5% level of significance. There was a strong positive significant relationship with the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy with gestational age at booking, and interpregnancy interval at Pearson Correlation of .882 and .786 respectively. The study has concluded that the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy has remained high despite measures on ground to reduce prevalence. It is therefore recommended that more efforts should be made on integrated education of women of reproductive age with regards to anaemia in pregnancy, causes, effects prevention and management of anaemia in pregnancy.

Assessing Preoperative Preparation Of Patients For Elective Surgery Among Nurses Working At The University Of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku- Ozalla, Enugu

Assessing Preoperative Preparation Of Patients For Elective Surgery Among Nurses Working At The University Of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku- Ozalla, Enugu
Enyanwuma, Ebere Emilia
The study assessed the preoperative preparation of patients for elective surgery among nurses at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu. Cross sectional survey design was adopted. Data was collected from 241 nurses who met the inclusion criteria from the surgical wards and theatre of the institution using a researcher developed questionnaire with reliability co-efficient of 0.8.Data was analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean, and standard deviation was used. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the hypotheses testing. P-value of less than 0.5 is statistically at significant level. The finding of the study showed that almost all percentage the physical preoperative preparation was done by the nurses for patients booked for surgery. A good figure of nurses perform all the psychological preoperative preparation of patients for elective surgery .Most percentage of the nurses perform the spiritual preparation of patients e.g respect the religion of the patients eg time of prayers for Roman Catholic, Muslims etc. and encourage patients to participate in ward prayers but they do not read passages from the bible for the patients preoperatively and do not call a priest or clergy for the patient when requested. Most of the sociocultural preoperative preparations of patients for elective surgery were done by the nurses, but the one not done is arranging for language assistance for patients with language difficulty. There is a significant association between the nurses preoperative preparation of patients for elective surgery and their education/training .P-value of F statistics are lesser than 0.05 at the level of significance for all items tested. This implies that with nurse’s higher professional education/training, preoperative preparation of patients for elective surgery is increased. There is no significant association between the nurses preoperative preparation of patients for elective surgery and their years of experience. P-value of F- statistics are greater than 0.05 level of significance for almost all the items tested, which implies that with nurses increased years of experience ,preoperative preparation of patients is not done better and more often. Recommendations were made that, management should employ more nurses and sponsor nurses to seminar and workshops to acquire appropriate knowledge, nurses should develop themselves to increase their knowledge and skill of preparing patients and that doctors should admit patients a day or two days before surgery to create time for preoperative preparation of patients.
