Human Resource Management Practices as Predictors of Teachers’ Professional commitment in Secondary schools in Abia State.
Ibe, Deborah Nwanne
This study aimed at finding out whether human resource management practices predict teachers’ professional commitment in secondary schools in Aba Education Zone, Abia State, Nigeria. This study also determined the contributions of human resource management practices to teachers’ professional commitment. There has been a complaint by teachers on the way they are being treated by school administrators, and this has lead to high rate of teacher truancy, absenteeism and lateness to school. This tends to influence teachers’ commitment to the teaching profession. It therefore becomes pertinent for school administrators to pay attention to human resource management practices bearing in mind that it will improve teachers’ professional commitment. The study was guided by five research questions and five null hypotheses. Corrrelational survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised 1877 secondary school teachers and the sample comprised 306 teachers drawn from the schools in Aba Education Zone. Multi stage random sampling technique was used to draw the sample. Instruments for data collection were structured, and adapted questionnaires. Data was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The major findings of the study showed that human resource management practices significantly contribute to teachers’ professional commitment, and that human resource management practices (training and development, compensation, performance appraisal, and labour relations) significantly predict teachers’ professional commitment in Aba Education Zone. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended, among others, that the State Ministry of Education should pay more attention to funding human resource development programmes in secondary schools in Aba Education Zone; Secondary Education Management Board should continue to improve on the human resource management practices in secondary schools in Aba Education zone, Abia state.

Analysis of Programme Implementation of Nomadic Schools in North Western Nigeria
Uba, Kabiru
The study focused on the analysis of the implementation of nomadic education programme in North Western Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design in which seven research questions and three null hypotheses were formulated. The population of the study consisted of 201,659 subjects. A multi-stage sampling technique was used in sampling 1228 respondents (1,000 students, 169 teachers and 59 policy makers). A researcher developed questionnaire titled “Nomadic Education Programme Implementation Questionnaire (NEPIQ)” was used for the study. The instrument was validated by three experts, two from Philosophy of Education and one from Measurement and Evaluation, all from the Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Crombach Alpha was used to ascertain the internal consistency of the instrument. The seven research questions were answered using mean (x) and Standard Deviation (SD) while t-test statistics was used to test the three null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. An overview of the overall results showed that the objectives of nomadic education programme were to a low extent achieved in North-Western Nigeria. Nomadic education programme is relevant in accelerating economic activities of pastoral nomads in North-Western Nigeria. Nomadic education curriculum is relevant in teaching and learning in nomadic schools in North-Western Nigeria. Nomadic education programme has improved the ability and competence of the nomads. The introduction of nomadic education programme has to a great extent boosted the socio-cultural life of the nomads in North-Western Nigeria. There are many problems facing nomadic education programme in North-Western Nigeria. The problems among others include frequent clash which devoid teachers from attending nomadic schools, irregular payment of nomadic teachers and inappropriate location of the nomadic schools. There are strategies for the implementation of nomadic education programme in North-Western Nigeria. The strategies among others include adoption of mobile schools, radio programme, television and distance education. Considering the results of the study, the researcher among others recommends that: Government through the federal ministry of education should provide avenues such as seminars and workshops for the parents of the nomads and the pupils to deliberate on issues regarding the relevance of Nomadic education. This is necessary in order to ensure that the nomads change their attitudes towards western education and as well, enable their parents to encourage them to participate in Nomadic education programme. Based on the findings of the study, limitations of the study were identified and suggestions for further studies were also made.

Parental Achievement Orientation as Predictor of Academic Self-Efficacy and Need-Achievement of In-School Adolescents in Anambra State, Nigeria
Mbaegbu, Adachukwu N. .
The study investigated parental achievement orientation as predictor of academic self-efficacy and need-achievement of in-school adolescents in Anambra State, Nigeria. Six research questions and six null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted correlation research design with a population of 15,734 in-school adolescents. A sample of 1200 in- school adolescents were used for the study. Three (3) instruments, namely Parental Achievement Orientation Scale (PAOS), Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES) and Need-Achievement Scale (NAS) were used as instruments for data collection. The instruments were face validated by three validators from the Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Reliability indices of 0.79, 0.79 and 0.88 were obtained for the three (3) instruments respectively. Data collected were analysed using multiple regression analysis. Co-efficient of determination was used to answer the research questions while analysis of variance was used to test null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Among the findings it was revealed that parental achievement orientation correlated positively with in-school adolescents’ academic need-achievement. Therefore, the study concluded that parental achievement orientation significantly correlated positively with in-school adolescent academic self-afficacy and their need-achievement. The implication of this finding is that parents should imbibe positive and high achievement orientation in their children. It was recommended, among others, that parents should adequately lend support to, and encourage their adolescents to be positive in their academics in order to boost their academic self-efficacy and need-achievement.

Socio-Demographic and Cultural Determinants as Correlates of Acceptability and Practice of Child Adoption among Married People in Imo State, Nigeria
Nwadike, Angela Ngozi
This study investigated socio-demographic and cultural determinants as correlates of acceptability and practice of child adoption among married people in Imo State. Six research questions and six null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted correlation research design. The population of the study was all 753 married people that adopted children in Imo State and the sample size was 450. Instrument for data collection was a researcher constructed questionnaire titled ‘’Socio-Demographic, Cultural determinants, Acceptability and Practice of Child Adoption Questionnaire (SDCAPQ).’’ The instrument was face validated by three experts in Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The instrument was trial tested on 30 adoptee parents from Abia State and Cronbach alpha reliability statistic was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument. An overall reliability Co-efficient value of 0.85 was obtained. Research Questions 1 to 4 were answered using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient while Multiple Regression was used for Research Question 5 and 6, Multiple Regression analysis were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was concluded among others that 34 percent of acceptability of child adoption among married people is predicted by the combined influence of socio-demographic and cultural determinants. The major findings of the study indicated that there is a positive relationship between cultural determinants and acceptability of child adoption among married people. It also shows that 50 percent of practice of child adoption among married people is predicted by the combined influence of socio-demographic and cultural determinants. Socio-demographic determinants are predictors of practice of child adoption, and that Socio-demographic and cultural determinant are significant predictors of acceptability of child adoption. The implication of this study is that cultural determinants affect the practice of child adoption which may negatively influence the work performance of married people and also the academic grade of adopted children. Based on the findings and implications of this study, the researcher recommended among others, that the government in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development should announce regularly through radio, television and newspapers the increasing rate of divorce, emotional trauma and death due to socio-demographic and cultural determinants hindering childless couples from adopting children. This could encourage them to accept and practice child adoption. They should also sponsor counsellors in conducting seminars and workshops for married people on benefits of child adoption in order to ensure that happiness exists in marriages in Imo State. The limitations of the study were discussed and suggestions were made for further research.
