Abstract:
This study sought to assess the level of information and communication technology skills acquired by SSS II students in secondary schools in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. A survey research design was used for the study. The population for the study comprised all the 1,792 Senior Secondary School (SSS II) students. The sample size for the study was 327 (162 male and 165 female) SSS2 students. The tool for data collection was a fifty (65) items structured questionnaire. The instrument for this study was faced validated by three experts. Two from the Department of Vocational Teacher Education (Computer Education Unit) and one from department of Arts Education, all in Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The research questions were analyzed using mean scores and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that computer appreciation skills acquired by SSS II students in secondary schools in Awka South Local Government Area are booting a computer system, launching a program through an icon on the desktop, minimizing an application program, maximizing an application program e.t.c, word processing skills acquired by SSS II students in Awka South Local Government Area are launching Microsoft word, save a document, create a word document, format a word document e.t.c., database skills acquired by SSS II students in Awka South Local Government Area include launching a Microsoft Access, delete record from table, save a database, open an existing database, create a new blank database, create a table, insert record into an existing table, edit table record e.t.c., spreadsheet skills acquired by SSS II students in Awka South Local Government Area include opening Microsoft Excel, edit graphs/charts, save a workbook, create a new workbook, enter labels and values, work with mathematical functions e.t.c., powerPoint skill acquired by SSS II students in Awka South Local Government Area are launching a PowerPoint program., create a new blank presentation, save the new presentation with a file name, add new slide, apply bullets and numbered list e.t.c., internet skill acquired by SSS II students in Awka South Local Government Area include launching a web browser, load a web page through the address bar, access electronic mail, source for information through search engines, download educational media such as video, pictures, charts, audio, upload educational media online e.t.c. The study recommended the conducting of computer training programs for students in their various schools periodically to help them acquire different forms of ICT skills, installation and maintenance of computer, internet facilities and other ICT facilities in various secondary schools in Awka South Local Government area.
