Abstract:
This research was conducted in Wales using MFL teachers in the colleges to identify the motivational devices employed in the Classroom and which ones were used for boys and girls. A structured questionnaire containing 15 items was administered to 155 MFL teachers in South Wales for data collection out of which 52% of them returned the instrument. The data collected were analysed through percentages. The data showed that all the devices could be applied to both boys and girls, as shown by the percentage of teachers' responses ranging from 56.4% to 89.2%. Few teachers indicated they used some exclusive techniques for boys, and these devices were: target setting for the class, use of ICT materials and interesting topics, making learning fun and group competitions. Use of ICT and Group Discussion were indicated as mostly employed for boys while for the girls, the devices mainly employed were use of songs/games/role play, good teacher pupil rapport and teacher enthusiasm. Based on these, it is recommended that MFL teachers should use the preferred device for each gender and also inform the learners about the utility of the languages to motivate them for language learning.
