Abstract:
This paper took a critical look at the status of public libraries in Nigeria and listed their roles in the promotion of psychological and intellectual development. Such roles include the provision of their services to all without discrimination, and being centers for social-cultural activities. Discussed also are the challenges being faced by the public libraries. Some of these challenges include low ICT application, lack of enough qualified personnel, poor funding, etc. Finally, this paper proffered strategic ways out of the challenges. These ways include giving constant training to library staff, erecting befitting buildings for greater space, repackaging information, etc.
