Abstract:
This project is a study on the contribution. being made by multinational Oil companies on not only on social up- liftment of their host communities and Nigeria in general but also on economic development or the nation hence. the title ., The Ro~ of Multinationals in the Socio-Economic Development of Nigeria. An Appraisal of the Oil Industry", Oil provides the greatest foreign exchange for the nation. It has become such important. that the society leaves no stone unturned in adoring one working with the oil companies. But the big question arises as whether the multinational arc doing enough in developing the nation Socio- Economically considering the amount of wealth that they make out or oil explorations and prospecting. The nation and in particular. the oil producing communities remain under-developed. Various forms of" health hazards resulting from the activities of multinational oil companies arc visible and poverty being a rule rather than exception Data for this project were got from reviewing the past work dune in this. area. personal observation and mostly from questionnaires which arc of two types, one was distributed to the host communities of the oil companies and the other stall of the oil companies,

The study is undertaken on the basic of hypothesis build around factors capable of indicating whether multinational oil companies operating in the oil industries arc contributing adequately to the SOCIO economic development of the nation, critical analysis of data using the .X2( chi square ) distribution resulted into arriving at some definite conclusion, These companies have not done much in the area of socio-economic development or the nation, Suffice it to say therefore that their contributionto the socio- economic development of the nation is grossly inadequate
