Abstract:
Continuous cost reduction, productivity and quality improvement have proved essential for organizations to stay in operation. We cannot avoid seeing how quality has developed into the most important competitive weapon and many organizations have realized that TQM is the way of managing for theJuture. TQM is far wider in its application than assuring product -or .service quality - it is a way of managing business process to ensure complete 'customer' satisfaction at every stage, internally and externally.The purpose of this work is to ascertain the prospects for the application of Total Quality Management in the University of Nigeria.This research work is aimed at accomplishing the following objectives:To try to determine the extent to which TQM can address the numerous problems plaguing the University of Nigeria.To assess how far TQM can help in raising workers' morale and in reducing the incessant strikes in the University.To attempt to find out whether and to what extent TQM can be used to reduce campus cultism and students' unrest in the University.To find out the extent to which TQM can be employed in enhancing Management-Labour relations.And to proffer suggestions based on the findings of the study.UNIVERSITY, OF NIGERIA NSUKKA Vlll In order to achieve this purpose, review of related literature on TOM was extensively carried out. The researcher got her data and information from two principal sources: Primary and Secondary sources. One set of questionnaire was drawn for the two categories of respondents namely:Academic and- Senior Administrative staff, and students of University of Nigeria, E~ugV Campus. Analyses of these data were carried out by use of tables and percentages for easy understanding. The outcome of our findings indicated that:1. TOM can address the problems of underfunding in UNN.2. TOM can help to raise worker morale and reduce incessant strikes.3. TOM can reduce campus custism and students' unrest.4. Prospects exist for TOM to enhance Management-Labour relations inthe University.5. Prospects also exist for TOM to address the many infrastructural inadequacies in the University
