Abstract:
The decline in Nigerian university hostels has been perceived conservatively by university administrators as a transient phase of negative growth entirely attributed to external rather than internal factors and the pattern of management of Nigerian universities hostels has remained largely unchanged for more than three decades despite major changes in government. Furthermore, the importance of students housing in higher education must be recognized. The students’ immediate need after a day’s lecture is a place to eat and sleep therefore his housing must be convenient to classroom and library and must be clean, warm, safe and well furnished. The primary aim of this research is to create a conducive living environment for both habitation and academic work. This has gone through great lengths in examining the history of halls of residence in the world and in Nigerian universities. Various case studies were thoroughly studied to find out their strengths and prevailing problems that can be seen in such hall of residence. Questionnaires were distributed to students to determine their preferences in student accommodation since they will eventually be the end users. These questionnaires were collected and relevant information and applied accordingly. General principles of student housing were examined and applied according to their peculiar situations. A concept was also developed to fit into the requirements of Nigerian students and satisfy their age long of clean and comfortable housing. Steps towards achieving this project were also proffered by the researcher. The truth be told, not every campus can come so close to ideal due to financial and site constraints but the best possible design world a long way in providing the right environment which is productive and relevant. The federal government policy on the participation of the private sector in the provision of hostel facilities in our universities is therefore a welcome and timely development. Responses from the private sector have been encouraging. It is hoped that when the modalities, which will be mutually agreed between the investors and each institution is finalized, the project will be of immense social and economic benefits to the investors and the beneficiaries. The essence of this work is to offer an architectural piece that satisfies the female students search for a conducive area/place that will help them to perform at their optimum when other things like good accommodation is not to be worried about. Thereby transforming today's female hostel accommodation in the university of Nigeria Enugu campus into accommodation that would produce well bred, intelligent, responsible young ladies and leaders of tomorrow. The key to achieving the best "MODEL FEMALE HOSTEL" therefore lies in properly understanding the psychology of the female student, involve the government or private sector in a financial scheme and develop a hostel that is of quality but within the rental unit of all.
