Abstract:
The study focused on refocusing the economy for enhanced productivity through employment generation with particular interest on University graduate unemployment.
To determine if there is any relationship between graduate unemployment and productivity.
To find out whether there is any relationship between University graduate unemployment and knowledge skills acquire in school.
To recommend solutions on how University graduate unemployment could be solved.
Based on this, three hypothesis were formulated
Data were sourced from two principal sources, primary and secondary data. Extensive literature review on textbooks, journals and other related materials were carried out.
The population of study includes all unemployed University graduate in Enugu State, stake holders and staff of National Directory of Employment.
Data collected were presented, analyzed and interpreted using table, frequencies and percentage while the hypothesis formulated were tested using chi-square.
Based on the analysis, the following findings were made:
It has been discovered that productivity and graduate unemployment are inversely related.
It is clearly evident that productivity is low in Nigeria.
Productivity and unemployment linkage shows bi-causal relationship in all the cases, except in the agricultural sector.
In view of the above, the researcher recommends among others that:
The government should in comparation with private industries establish more intensive small-scale enterprises which has propensity to creat more jobs for University graduate and higher incomes.
A systematic manpower development programme for University graduates should be put in place both in public and private sectors.
In conclusion, there is an established relationship between University graduate, unemployment and productivity.
