Abstract:
Environmental Management entails the planned guarding of the environment with a view "to making it retain its carrying capacity. This requires enormous finance to execute. This study was embarked upon to examine the position of Nigeria regarding the issue of environmental management. It had probed into the problems and prospects of financing Environmental Management Programmes in the country targeted at determining what and what should be done for necessary improvement. The methodology adopted is such that would allow for a first hand contact with relevant data and information for a reliable study. Consequently, the data used in this study have been collected from the study questionnaire, interviews, discussions, reference to related previous works and publications, textbooks, newspaper reports, magazines, gazettes, workshop/seminar presentations, communiqué, personal observations, etc. The chi-square test statistic was used in testing the hypotheses postulated in this study. Essentially, this study found that Environmental Management Programmes are not popular in Nigeria. Also, such programmes are not properly funded by both governmental and non-governmental establishments. It was equally discovered that the success of any Environmental Management Programme is dependent on the extent to which funds are made available for their execution. It therefore called on government and other relevant organizations to accord necessary recognition to and embark meaningfully on the programme of environmental management so as to align Nigeria with the international league of environmentally certified nations. It is hoped that the findings and recommendations of this work will be adequately utilized by all interest groups and stakeholders in the environment for a new Nigeria.
