Abstract:
Appraisal exercises have been universally acknowledged as one of the ways of assessing staff performance over a given period. It is also, used in the assessment of Organizational performance with a view to determining the extent of achievement of institutional objectives. The assessment will eventually lead to the correction of deviations, where necessary, and rewarding of hard-working staff as appropriate. Training needs, transfers, retirements and other administrative decisions can be taken based on the result of an appraisal exercise. This research examined the attitude of staff of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, towards performance appraisal. The study reveal ed, among other things, that close system of appraisal is still in use . It was also, determined that the exercise, is not carried out regularly. The outcome of the appraisal exercise is not communicated -to staff early, hence, some staff had developed non-challant attitude towards it. Recommendations were made towards the ways of correcting the identified lapses, which hopefully, would lead to motivation of the entire staff workforce and consequent, improvement in productivity.
