Abstract:
Traditional architecture still stands relevant today because it has always addressed sustainability. There is so much untapped beauty and romance evident in African traditional architecture. It is to this reason that this design proposal was initiated. The relevance of good traditional building is that it not only allows us to celebrate our past technological achievements but also to study and understand the primary mechanisms which guided the design of the particular building. This proposal is aimed at adopting this vernacular style of architecture into a resort design. Resort refers to building or a group of buildings designed in a particular setting to cater for both relaxation and recreational activities. Many ancient architectural traditions promoted habitats that were sustainable and traditional wisdom is partly reflected in the practices in use in many local communities. The basic challenge faced in the project is that traditional building methods cannot be simply copied, but need to be adapted to make them relevant to modem realities. This could also form the basis for developing more sustainable technologies.
