The Technical Manpower Training Techniques in Selected Oil Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

This research is based on the technical manpower training techniques in selected Oil companies in Nigeria. The Oil companies studied included, the Shell Petroleum Development company of Nigeria Limited, Texaco Nigeria PLC, .and the Nigerian National petroleum corporation (N.N.P.C.). The research was conducted through the use of questionnaires and persona l interviews. A total number of 370 questionnaires were distributed in t h e corpora t e training departments of the oil companies studied. 224 questionnaires were answered and returned to the researcher, representing 61 % of the total questionnaires distributed. The data were analysed using Frequency tables, Char ts and the Chi -Square (x2) test. The findings revealed that the operating oil companies require technical training for their personnel but do not have complete facilities and trainers in their training departments. It revealed also that the technical training personnel are largely Nigeria ns who were trained locally and abroad. It also showed that the training opportunities are not restricted to only high powered technical personnel like the engineers and geologists. Field operators like the divers, welders and safety officers are also trained technically. Furthermore, the research findings revealed that training evaluation is usually carried out after the training programmes. Techniques adopted in the t raining pr ogrammes of these oil companies included; local and oversea courses ; lectures, workshops and seminars with audio-visual aids as well as field practicals.
