Abstract:
This paper discusses the causes and remedies of deterioration of archival materials in academic libraries at the tropical zones. Academic libraries are known as the hub of intellectual activities in
every academic institution and they house different forms of information materials which include
archival materials. Archival materials are unique information materials that have endless values and are useful especially for research purposes. However, they can be endangered especially in the
tropical zones. The tropical zones are known for breeding insects and rodents that can harm archival materials. The paper identifies different factors that accelerate deterioration of archival materials such as environmental or climatic, biological, chemical, human factors including disasters. These factors can cause permanent damage to these information materials. It also suggests remedies to the deterioration of archival materials such as preventive and curative measures.
