dc.description.abstract This research studied the effect of team management on organizational performance in selected banking industries in Nigeria. The challenges, strategies and prospects focused on establishing the extent to which team strategy for business management relate to teamwork approach to productivity, ascertaining the extent to which teamwork approach holds good prospects for sustenance and viability in banking industry, identifying the relationship between teamwork and organizational growth, determining the level of acceptance of work team approach among employees and finding out if the management is hindered by the inability to cope with the challenges of teamwork approach. The study adopted the survey research design, in which four banks in the South-Eastern Nigeria were studied. The population of the study was 1,113 and the sample size was calculated to be 390 using the Bill Godden formula. The sampling selection was the stratified sampling method. A structured questionnaire and oral interview guide were the research instruments used for the study. Data collected were presented descriptively using charts, simple frequency and percentage distribution, mean and standard deviation. Hypotheses one, four and five were tested using the Linear Regression Analytical Technique, hypotheses two was tested using the Z-test statistic and the hypothesis three was tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The major findings of the study were that team strategy significantly enhanced teamwork approach to productivity in Nigerian banking industry (r = 0.644, p < 0.05); teamwork approach significantly promotes sustainability in banks (z = 6.5, p < 0.05); there was a significant positive relationship between teamwork and organizational growth in the management of banks (r = 0.80, p < 0.05); the acceptance level of teamwork significantly promoted employee productivity (r = 0.85, p < 0.05) and teamwork challenge significantly affected organisational performance (r = 0.772 ,p < 0.05). The work concluded that teamwork approach to performance management has the prospect of making the banking industry very effective, viable and sustainable. Specifically, it has the benefits of improved productivity and product quality, innovativeness and manpower development. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that teamwork approach should be adopted by banking firms as an integral concept within their organizations, particularly as interventionist strategy to the management of business units; an effective team should be built by applying practical skills/strategies to maximize team performance and development; and leaders in the banking sector should encourage their organizations to anticipate to form, understand to norm, and manage to storm – in ensuring an effective and efficient team within the organization. en_US
