Abstract:
The focus of this study was to develop a learning management system for Microsoft Excel for Computer Education students in Universities in South East Nigeria to handle the challenges being experienced by students in learning spreadsheet related courses. Specifically, the research objectives were to determine the objectives of the LMS, determine the learning activities required in developing the LMS, determine the delivery systems required for developing the LMS, determine the evaluation techniques required for the LMS, develop LMS, validate the developed LMS and determine the effectiveness of the developed LMS. The R&D design method was adopted and descriptive survey research was conducted using 31 computer Education lecturers drawn from University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, 10 Software developers from Tenece Professional Services, Enugu and Management Information System (MIS), UNN and 89 final year students of spreadsheet management. Data collected were analysed using mean, standard deviation, t-test, Anova and Ancova. The results revealed that the developed LMS will help students learn Microsoft Excel with ease, encourage hands on practice, be user friendly, cover the same contents like the classroom and more, be interactive with pictures, encourage student engagement within and outside classroom learning, be easily accessible amongst others. The study therefore recommended that the developed Learning Management System should be adopted by the Federal Ministry of Education for teaching spreadsheet courses in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the developed Learning Management System should be adopted by lecturers in computer education for effective teaching and learning and teachers should ensure that the LMS emphasizes practical sessions and hands on experience than theory.
