Abstract:
Small scale industrialization plays a critical role in the process of economic development and is a fundamental policy objective in most developing countries. It is estimated that small enterprises constitute greater percentage of the nation’s business and produce about half of its gross national products. However, in the heat of the ongoing economic recession, the collapse of small-scale enterprises has created considerable concern in Nigeria. Such collapses are usually traced to Managerial inadequacies. This project report intends to study the existing Managerial practices in selected small scale industries in Aba town of Abia state in order to highlight the existing managerial inadequacies in such industries. The study will also endeavour to find out the causes of these managerial inadequacies and then recommend possible sustainable managerial strategies for small scale industries survival. In the course of the study, three research questions were asked: (a) What are the areas of existing managerial inadequacies observed in small scale industries? (b) What are the possible causes of such managerial inadequacies? (c) What plans were made in the past or are being presently put in place to arrest such possible causes? Observations, personal interviews and questionnaires as well as data collected from review of related literature and available documents were used to provide answers to the above stated research questions. Simple random sampling which is considered as the most bias free selection process was used in this project research.
