Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess the implementation of adult basic literacy programme in Cross River State. Four research questions and four null hypotheses guided the study. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The related literature to the study was reviewed under four main headings namely: conceptual framework, theoretical framework, review of related empirical studies and summary of literature review. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A total of 1996 respondents comprising 1920 adult learners and 76 facilitators were used for the study. A 24 item questionnaire modelled on a four- point rating scale was used to collect data for the study. Three experts validated the instrument. The instrument was trial tested and the reliability coefficients using Cronbach’s Alpha were 0.73 for cluster A, 0.82 for cluster B, 0.66 for cluster C and 0.75 for cluster D, with an overall reliability coefficient of .74 respectively. The Research questions were analysed using mean and standard deviation, t-test was used to test the null hypotheses. The results of the study revealed among others that funds, literacy materials, training of facilitators and monitoring for implementation of adult basic literacy programme were inadequately provided. The implications of the above findings were examined and it was recommended among others that government and other stakeholders should pool their resources together to ensure that literacy materials are adequately provided in the various centres to enhance teaching and learning activities in the literacy centres.
