Abstract:
This study examined herdsmen/farmers conflict in Enugu State. The objectives of the study were to: identify the ways herdsmen-farmers conflict impact on economic development in Enugu State; determine the legal and policy measures the Enugu State has taken to combat the herdsmen-farmers conflict and determine the measures to be taken to ameliorate the impact of herdsmen-famers conflict on economic development in Enugu State. The study tested one null hypothesis. A total of 405 respondents were selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. In the analysis of the result for the study, mean and standard deviation were used while the chi-square was used to test the hypothesis raised. The result showed that herdsmen/farmers conflict negatively impact on economic development. It was also found that the government of Enugu State has so far not taken any legal or policy measure to address the conflict. The researcher also found that to address the conflict, the measures that the Enugu State government should take to ameliorate the impact of herdsmen/farmers conflict on economic development include: rebuilding destroyed houses; financial compensation; provision of camps for displaced persons; provision of relief materials; rebuilding destroyed houses and provision of interest free loans.
