Abstract:
The study investigated the influence of school environmental factors in the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English in Nsukka Education Zone. This study became necessary because of the poor performance of senior secondary III students in Literature-in-English. The study employed Ex post facto design. Three hundred students and twenty one teachers from 15 schools randomly drawn from public secondary schools in Nsukka Education Zone of Enugu State were used for the study. Students’ Influence of School Environmental Factors Questionnaire (SEFSQ) was the instrument used to collect data for the study. Four research questions were answered and four hypotheses were tested. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-Test. The result showed that schools have inadequate physical facilities, with some being totally unavailable. The teachers prefer working in accessible schools with proximity to adequate school facilities and infrastructure. The study concluded that inadequacy of school environment has been found to influence the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English. The climate has been found to greatly influence the teaching and learning of Literature-in-English. On the school location, the schools in the rural areas are least preferred. Non-cosmopolitan has also greatly affected the rural schools as the communities still have influence in the administration and operations of the schools. The study recommended that to improve teaching and learning of Literature-in-English in the zone, government should strive to provide physical facilities and enabling environment in schools. The study suggested that further research may be conducted on influence of school environment on performance of public primary schools.
