Abstract:
This paper aims at contributing to the growing discourse of job satisfaction of workers in the workplace. in examining the factor that contribute to job satisfaction of academic librarians, two research questions and a null hypothesis were promulgated using a survey design. The thirty six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in addition to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja were sampled through a stratified disproportionate random sampling technique, the six Geo-politcal zones of the country were stratified, each zone forming a stratum and at least one university was sampled in each stratum. this made for wide coverage and enabled all the different parts of the country with different socio-cultural and religious backgrounds to be represented. A questionnaire was then used to gather data which made it possible to identify factors that contribute to job satisfaction of Librarians in Nigeria. the factors were the following: agreeable colleagues, adequate salary and other remuneration; good conditions of service; initiative and freedom to develop own ideas; use of acquired professional experience,security of tenure; opportunity to serve people and interact with clients, increasing professional status; active participation in administration and planning; exercise responsibility and authority ;promotion prospects; provision of technical support facilities and finally, quality in service training. These factors were found to be gender neutral. Therefore, there was no difference between the ratings of male and female librarians. The survey then ended with several recommendations to enhance the job satisfaction of academic Librarians in Nigeria.
