Abstract:
This study explored the Application of Public Relations strategies to counter Terrorism using the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps as a case study. Acts of terrorism are considered globally as crime against the state and humanity. Perpetrators of terrorism target large scale destruction of lives and property in order to dramatize attention and force public attention. It becomes imperative then to adopt ways and strategies in stopping this. The study adopted the survey research method which involved the use of the questionnaire to get answers to the substantive issues from the offices and men of the Nigerian security and civil defence corps Jos/Plateau command. 318 questionnaires were returned in useable from out of the 333 that was distributed which formed the bases for the analysis. Presentation of response by the respondents was done using frequencies and percentages. Chi-square hypothesis test was used to analyse the hypothesis postulated. Both the descriptive and inferential statistics was analysed using SPSS version. 17.00. findings show that the level of knowledge about terrorism and counter terrorism that the respondents have are the ones that they got from seminars they attend and that they advocated post graduate studies for practitioners in public relations counter terrorism. The Researcher concluded the study by proposing two Public Relations models and strategies for counter terrorism which are the T Triangle mode and Terrorism intervention mode. Finally it was recommended among other things that there should be increased education about terrorism and that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps should train and retain any corps staff to form counter terrorists groups.
